Thinking about IV sedation for your dental treatment? IV sedation offers significant advantages over nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. It can also cover a wider range of patient needs with greater effectiveness, flexibility, and safety. Let’s consider some of the advantages…
A higher level of sedation is achieved with IV sedation over oral sedation or nitrous oxide. IV sedation is best suited for patients with moderate to severe anxiety or for those who have a larger treatment plan. Because of the increased sedation levels that can be achieved with IV sedation, even patients with severe anxieties and dental phobias can be successfully treated.
Speed of onset of sedation. The intravenous administration of sedative drugs takes effect within a few seconds, much faster than with oral sedation which may take over an hour. Nitrous oxide has also a fast onset but it cannot provide a high level of sedation.
Adjustable dosage and sedation level. The ability to quickly and easily adjust the level of sedation is considered a main advantage of IV sedation dentistry over oral sedation where the effects on each patient are not accurately predictable.
Recovery time after IV sedation is generally shorter than that required after oral sedation, mainly due to the more controlled dosage of sedatives administered to the patient.
Due to the amnesic effect of IV sedation, the patient will usually have little or no memory of their dental procedures. This effect can be especially useful for patients with dental anxiety or for those who have to undergo long and invasive dental treatments.
IV sedation can also suppress the gag reflex in over-sensitive patients, in the same way as oral sedation and nitrous oxide.
IV conscious sedation is an effective alternative to General Anesthesia for patients who wish to have high level of sedation but want to avoid general anesthesia. The fact that the patient remains conscious throughout the procedure also makes IV conscious sedation a much safer alternative to general anesthesia, especially for those who are medically compromised.
Dental treatments under IV sedation can be performed much faster and in fewer appointments. Time saving is an important benefit of IV sedation for busy patients with a strict schedule.
