Are you missing one or more teeth? According to the American College of Prosthodontists, over 178 million Americans are missing at least one permanent tooth. Tooth loss can hurt the appearance and the overall health of your smile. In order to return a smile to full function and health, Dr. Michael Sohl offers innovative dental bridges.
Impact of Tooth Loss
Even the loss of a single tooth can lead to negative consequences for your smile. In many cases, the surrounding teeth may start to drift towards to the empty socket. When this happens, misalignment occurs. Crooked or crowded teeth lead to malocclusion, or an uneven bite, which increases the risks of:
- Bruxism (Teeth grinding)
- TMJ Disorder
- Further Tooth Loss
In addition, uneven teeth offer hiding places for bacteria and food particles. Soon, the bacteria break down the food particles, causing plaque buildup. Plaque weakens the outer enamel and causes gum inflammation. Without treatment, patients experience an increased chance of developing tooth decay, gum disease, or dental infection. Replacing a missing tooth as quickly as possible can help you avoid these serious consequences and restore your smile to optimal beauty.
With a dental bridge, Dr. Sohl can replace either one or several missing teeth. A bridge consists of an artificial tooth, or a pontic, with crowns attached to each side. The crowns and replacement tooth will be custom-made based on impressions of your teeth. After preparing the teeth on either side of the gap in your smile, the crowns will be placed using a powerful bonding agent. The crowns will secure the restoration. For some patients, Dr. Sohl may recommend a dental bridge attached using dental implants.
